About the position

The Yard Driver at SpartanNash is responsible for safely operating a commercial truck within the transportation yard, unloading and loading trailers, and delivering products to local customers. This role requires effective communication with supervisors and warehouse personnel, maintaining the yard's organization, conducting vehicle inspections, and ensuring compliance with DOT regulations. The position emphasizes safety, customer service, and adherence to operational guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Safely drive commercial truck within the transportation yard for unloading/loading of trailers and delivering products to local specified customers.
  • Maintain the yard in a neat and orderly manner, ensuring the yard fueling station is clean and tractors and trailers are positioned correctly.
  • Conduct yard checks of trailers and complete trailer inventory to maintain control of all trailers.
  • Operate commercial truck to move and reposition trailers to and from the loading docks.
  • Secure trailer doors and ensure loads are secure using appropriate locks and seals.
  • Deliver products to local customers, assist with unloading, verify correct products are delivered, and obtain delivery confirmation.
  • Inform warehouse associates of invoice discrepancies and return damaged products.
  • Report unsafe loading conditions and notify the dispatcher/supervisor of any damaged equipment.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections on the vehicle to ensure all components are in working condition.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and adhere to safety guidelines at all times.
  • Perform post-trip duties, including fueling the tractor/trailer and completing DOT logs.
  • Perform simple vehicle maintenance and report damage or repair requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (preferred)
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (preferred)
  • Six months or at least 50,000 miles of all seasons commercial driving experience (required)
  • Pass DOT physical examination and DOT pre-employment drug test, subject to periodic random tests.
  • Ability to work up to 60 hours per week including nights and weekends.
  • Good communication skills to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Good organizational, prioritization, and attention to detail skills.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Ability to read maps and operate vehicles in various traffic and weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations and DOT guidelines.
  • Flexibility to work in shifts including evenings and weekends.
