About the position

The Yard Foreman at Builders FirstSource is responsible for overseeing and directing the activities of yard personnel to ensure excellent customer service and the safe and efficient movement of goods and equipment on the premises. This role involves managing the loading, unloading, and movement of materials, ensuring compliance with shipping specifications, and maintaining safety regulations. The Yard Foreman will also provide on-the-job training to new employees, ensuring they are knowledgeable about the products stored in the yard and warehouse, as well as housekeeping and safety procedures. In addition to supervising yard operations, the Yard Foreman will perform the same work as other yard employees, ensuring that outside areas are kept neat and clean, and that scraps and yard debris are appropriately recycled or disposed of. This position requires assisting customers with loading and providing them with delivery status information and inventory availability. The Yard Foreman must understand and observe all safety procedures and practices, ensuring that all employees do the same to prevent injuries or damage. Periodic safety meetings will be scheduled, and recommendations for improving safety procedures will be solicited. The role may also involve other duties as assigned, making it essential for the Yard Foreman to be adaptable and proactive in their approach to managing yard operations.

Responsibilities

  • Direct workers in loading, unloading, and movement of materials on the premises utilizing material handling equipment and machinery.
  • Oversee receiving of yard materials and instruct yard workers in receiving and storage procedures.
  • Inspect loading operations for outgoing delivery to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, load limits, and safety regulations.
  • Prepare and reconcile bills of lading and packing slips.
  • Provide on-the-job training to new yard employees including product knowledge and safety procedures.
  • Perform the same work as other yard employees when necessary.
  • Ensure outside areas are kept neat and clean, and scraps and yard debris are appropriately recycled or disposed of.
  • Assist customers in loading and load building, providing delivery status information and answering related questions.
  • Understand and observe all safety procedures and practices, ensuring employees do the same to prevent injuries or damage.
  • Schedule periodic safety meetings and solicit recommended changes to improve safety procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Four (4) years of experience performing and coordinating yard or manufacturing activities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of yard and product activities, including component or materials weights and methods of loading.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate work processes to maintain and increase manpower and equipment efficiency.
  • Advanced knowledge of operation and handling of all machinery and equipment used in the yard; maintains certification to operate such if required.
  • Communication skills sufficient to speak before teams and work groups to explain work rules, product standards, and productivity goals.
  • Ability to read and write work schedules and reports.
  • Knowledge of basic math, counting, and estimating.
