Yard Jockey (3RD-SHIFT)

About the position

The position involves safely handling and maneuvering tractor/trailers and other large equipment to facilitate loading and unloading operations in the yard. The role requires performing inspections of yard and dock equipment, loading and unloading freight, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. The employee will also communicate effectively with dock supervision and other personnel while working in various weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Safely handle and maneuver tractor/trailers and other large equipment for loading and unloading operations.
• Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections of yard and dock equipment.
• Properly cube, load, and unload freight using various equipment.
• Load freight to prevent damage and shifting during transit.
• Accurately set up, break down, and hook trailers safely.
• Ensure all pup trailers have tilt bars lowered prior to loading.
• Raise and lower landing gear as needed.
• Monitor yard for unsafe drivers and non-employees; notify management.
• Perform all duties of dockworker as requested.
• Communicate effectively with Dock supervision, Line Haul drivers, and Fleet Services personnel.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent education and experience.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Valid CDL and acceptable MVR required for driving on public roads.
• Registered with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse if a CDL holder.
• Experience in the transportation industry is a plus but not required.
• Stable work history is preferred.
• Ability to operate a forklift (7500 lb. vehicle).
• Must be able to push or pull loaded pallet jack and/or hand truck with a minimum load of 70 lbs.
• Physical abilities include standing, lifting, twisting, turning, and climbing a ladder.
• Must be capable of dropping/hooking and coupling trailers, involving cranking landing gear and pulling 5th wheel pin with approximately 65 lbs. of pressure.
• Night/weekend shifts may be required.
• Must be able to lift approximately 70 lbs. or more as required by job functions.
• Must comply with all company policies, rules, procedures, and Code of Conduct.
• Must be able to interact well with others and work independently or in a team setting.
• Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high volume environment with multiple priorities.
• Ability to read, interpret, and comply with written information and documents with high comprehension and concentration level.
