About the position

The YMCA After School Counselor position involves working with children in an afterschool program, ensuring a safe, engaging, and fun environment. The role requires leading group activities, managing child behavior, and implementing planned activities while maintaining a focus on child development and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe, engaging, and bully-free environment for children.
  • Lead children in group activities, especially recreational activities.
  • Report any accidents, incidents, or suspected child abuse to the Site Director.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Assist with drills for emergency procedures and be capable of implementing them.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate creativity, patience, and enthusiasm in working with children.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required within the first 30 days.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and carry for a distance of at least 40 yards.
  • Previous experience in a licensed childcare center preferred but not mandatory.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is preferred.
  • Experience working with children in a recreational or educational setting.
