About the position

The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is seeking a Youth and Family Programs Manager to lead the planning, organization, and execution of public and community programs that cater to family and youth audiences. This role is integral to the agency's strategic and interpretive plans, focusing on creating engaging experiences that enhance annual programs and living history events. The manager will develop family activities that appeal to both young and intergenerational audiences, ensuring that these programs are innovative and educational. In collaboration with the Adult and Annual Programs Manager, the Community Engagement Manager, and the broader Learning and Community Engagement team, the Youth and Family Programs Manager will work to build a dynamic calendar of events aimed at increasing local visitation to the Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. This position requires cross-departmental coordination to ensure effective staff and volunteer support for various programs and events. Additionally, the manager will provide expertise and assistance to other divisions within Museum Operations & Education on special initiatives as assigned. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, demonstrating the ability to work respectfully with individuals from diverse cultures, ages, and economic backgrounds. They will also have a proven track record of developing creative educational programs that meet the needs of youth and families, as well as the ability to manage multifaceted projects while adhering to strict timelines. Knowledge of museum audiences and effective engagement strategies is essential, along with a solid understanding of interpretive principles and teaching techniques suitable for young learners.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and execute public and community programs related to the agency's strategic and interpretive plans.
  • Develop family activities that serve young and intergenerational audiences.
  • Collaborate with the Adult and Annual Programs Manager and Community Engagement Manager to create a calendar of events.
  • Coordinate staff and volunteer support for programs or events across multiple departments.
  • Provide expertise and support to other Museum Operations & Education divisions on special initiatives.
  • Pilot programs and establish a foundational slate of offerings for youth and families.
  • Manage budgets from different funding sources.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative, innovative, and engaging educational programs and events for youth and family audiences.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion, with the ability to work effectively with diverse cultures, ages, and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to pilot programs and grow local, repeat participants.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multifaceted programs and projects with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of museum audiences and engagement strategies.
  • Understanding of interpretive principles and teaching techniques for young learners.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience in developing and administering budgets.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduation from an accredited college/university with coursework in museum education, education, history, public history, or museum studies.
  • Experience in community program or event management.
  • Experience with formal and/or informal teaching with learners under 18.
