About the position

The Youth at Heart Project Coordinator position at Swain County Schools is designed to oversee and enhance mental health services for students within the district. The primary objective of this role is to promote mental health awareness and ensure the delivery of quality prevention, intervention, evaluation, and support services. The Coordinator will work collaboratively with school teams, families, teachers, and staff to build connections and provide necessary technical assistance and training. This position is pivotal in advancing the mental health initiatives outlined in the school mental health plan, ensuring compliance with applicable policies and regulations, and maintaining financial accountability for the project. In this role, the Coordinator will facilitate various district mental health programs and initiatives, ensuring that project outcomes are met through effective coordination with the school district team. The responsibilities include managing the implementation of Project YAH at the district level, monitoring performance, and coordinating with community service providers and stakeholders. Engagement with families and students is prioritized to ensure their involvement in the planning and implementation processes. The Coordinator will also be responsible for timely and accurate reporting of district data, promoting access to mental health care, and collaborating with public and private agencies to provide mental health services on campus. The position requires the development of a comprehensive mental health plan and a school-wide system of intervention, focusing on early identification of needs and enhancing the overall school climate. The Coordinator will assist in identifying and delivering evidence-based prevention and intervention programs, conduct ongoing assessments related to social and emotional learning, and provide consultation and education on mental health to staff, students, and families. Participation in various school team meetings and crisis intervention assessments is also a key aspect of this role, along with the development of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans. The Coordinator will serve on several teams, including the District-Level Behavioral Health Resource Team and the School-Level Threat Management Team, and will be responsible for designing and delivering professional development related to emotional and behavioral concerns in adolescents.

Responsibilities

  • Provide facilitation of district Mental Health programs and initiatives.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the school mental health plan.
  • Responsible for coordination and implementation of Project YAH at the district level, including technical or programmatic requirements, compliance with applicable policies and regulations, financial accountability, and administrative tasks.
  • Coordinates with the school district team to ensure project outcomes are achieved.
  • Manages and monitors district implementation and performance, including coordination of community service providers and partnerships with community stakeholders.
  • Prioritizes engagement with families and students in district planning and implementation of the project.
  • Ensures timely and accurate reporting of district data.
  • Coordinate with school teams to promote access to mental health care.
  • Coordinate student mental health services.
  • Collaborate and assist with and provide oversight of public and private agencies to offer access to mental health services and programs on the school campus for students and their families.
  • Assist in the coordination of a school-wide system of intervention, including implementation of a comprehensive mental health plan.
  • Enhancing the school climate and broadly by promoting mental health wellness, early identification of needs.
  • Assisting in the identification and delivery of a range of evidence based prevention to intense interventions.
  • Developing program evaluation and data collection for efficacy and effectiveness of services.
  • Communicate extensively and provide consultation, mental health education and prevention information to staff, students, families and school community.
  • Participate in school team meetings to develop relationships and awareness around trauma, emotional, social and behavioral needs.
  • Conduct ongoing school need and readiness assessments related to social and emotional learning.
  • Assist with Crisis Intervention assessments.
  • Assist in identifying programming and services related to the mental health and well-being of all students.
  • Provide consultation and participate on MTSS team meetings as needed.
  • Assist in the development of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Serve on the District-Level Behavioral Health Resource Team, School-Level Threat Management Team and/or other designed teams as assigned.
  • Collaborate and assist in the coordination and development and provide technical assistance as needed on the implementation of a universal behavior screener.
  • Assess in conjunction with the Administrative, school teams, co-located mental health, the training needs of school teachers/staff.
  • Design, coordinate and deliver professional development related to needs noted among school staff on emotional and interfering behavioral concerns in adolescents.

Requirements

  • Master's degree (MA, MSW) required; clinical license (e.g., LPC, LCSW or PsyD) in clinical work preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in related areas of public health or mental health preferred.
  • Knowledge of public education in NC, school mental health, implementation science, and interconnected systems frameworks.
  • Knowledge of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Individual, Group, Family Modalities and Mindfulness.
  • Knowledge of NC Medicaid billing opportunities.
  • Strong skills in building and maintaining appropriate relationships with all affected stakeholders.
  • High-level oral and written communication skills.
  • Prioritization and risk management skills.
