About the position

The Youth Counselor position at Chatham Youth Development Center involves monitoring and supervising juveniles in various settings, including while housed, at school, and during daily activities. The role includes safety and security duties, maintaining a secure environment, and routinely observing juveniles. Counselors are responsible for completing daily records, documenting safety violations, and providing feedback to the treatment team. They will communicate treatment plans to clients, provide counseling and therapeutic interventions, and participate in the development of individual treatment and reintegration programs. The position requires physical and mechanical restraints and medication administration as part of the responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and supervise juveniles while housed, at school, and during daily activities.
  • Maintain a secure environment and routinely monitor and observe juveniles.
  • Complete daily records including documenting safety violations and security breaches.
  • Provide activity briefings for shift personnel, crisis intervention events, and youth progress updates.
  • Communicate information regarding treatment plans to clients.
  • Provide counseling and therapeutic intervention.
  • Serve as a member of a therapeutic treatment team.
  • Utilize a range of counseling techniques and skills in crisis interventions.
  • Implement individual and group treatment plans to effect behavioral changes.
  • Administer scoring and interpret assessment tools to evaluate treatment progress.
  • Participate in the development of individual treatment, educational, vocational, and community reintegration programs.
  • Administer physical and mechanical restraints and medication.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Two years of experience working with the juvenile/family client population or related human services experience.
  • Experience with at least two of the following: individual behavior and/or group behavior, child and/or adolescent development, family systems, individual and/or group counseling techniques, minority group cultures, treatments for behavioral and/or developmental challenges, crisis intervention techniques.
  • Experience developing and/or administering client treatment plans.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background check, Drug Screening test, Psychological test, Sexual Risk Screening test, and Physical (including Vision and Hearing).
  • Must be a US citizen and at least 20 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
