About the position

The Youth Counselor position involves assisting in the daily operations of an after-school program under the supervision of the Youth Director. The role focuses on creating a positive learning environment, supervising children, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Counselors will work part-time during the school year, contributing to the development and implementation of engaging activities for children.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of the program, including opening and closing tasks.
  • Create an inviting and positive learning environment.
  • Supervise children in all activities to maintain a ratio of 1:10 at all times.
  • Ensure a safe and secure environment in the classroom and throughout the center.
  • Set up and maintain the classroom's physical environment to foster learning, comfort, health, and safety.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with each child's family to foster development.
  • Encourage the development of each student and stimulate social development.
  • Create and develop activities as part of the yearly curriculum to engage children.
  • Be sensitive to the diversity of children, their families, and co-workers.
  • Proactively interact with students during activities and trips.
  • Assist the supervisor in organizing activities and programs throughout the academic year.
  • Engage and maintain good relationships with parents, families, and community partners.
  • Participate in all required training and workshops.
  • Maintain confidentiality of children and parents.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the organization and center.
  • Be a role model and leader for students and the center.
  • Identify problems and provide solutions proactively.
  • Conduct daily and weekly licensing walk-throughs to ensure safety compliance.
  • Complete necessary paperwork, including attendance and incident reports.
  • Participate in bi-weekly team meetings as scheduled by the Youth Coordinator.
  • Delegate tasks among team members to ensure work completion.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with children is highly preferred.
  • Classroom management experience is preferred.
  • Curriculum development experience is preferred.
  • Ability to observe and assess children's behavior and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and guidance skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse children, families, and co-workers.
  • Quick-thinking, flexibility, and effective leadership capabilities.
  • Outgoing and energetic personality.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise initiative.
