About the position

The Community Development Youth Director at the Durham YMCA is responsible for leading and developing youth programs and staff under the supervision of the Sr. Youth Director. This role emphasizes safety, relationship-building, and program management in alignment with the YMCA's mission and goals. The position is funded by the 21st Century Grant, which supports afterschool programs focused on education and character development, and is set to run through 2028.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to and supervises the fulfillment of the YMCA mission through Youth Department activities and programs.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Plans and promotes high-quality and engaging programming for assigned programs, emphasizing safety, relationships, skill development, character development, group control, and fun.
  • Plans and organizes day-to-day operations and is present in assigned programs based on Association Program Guidelines.
  • Continually evaluates, improves, and innovates all assigned programs to ensure they meet or exceed Association guidelines and standards.
  • Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
  • Maintains all records of assigned programs necessary for the operation of the department and branch effectively.
  • Recruits and hires staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity.
  • Responsible for onboarding and developing staff for success.
  • Maintains current and required certifications and records for staff according to YMCA requirements.
  • Attends all pertinent meetings including Y Leadership trainings and Youth Director Meetings.
  • Assists with the YMCA Annual Campaign through staff development and volunteer recruitment.
  • Fulfills department/branch obligations as required by supervisor/Branch Director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred and/or 1-2 years of related experience.
  • Experience in creating and fostering communities and relationship building through programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in program and personnel development.
  • Ability to effectively manage staff, programs, and department schedules.
  • Strong oral, public speaking, and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude, high level of initiative, and professionalism.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Nice-to-haves
