About the position

The Youth Program Coordinator at First Ascent Climbing & Fitness is responsible for overseeing and enhancing the youth program at the Station Square location. This role involves managing youth classes, seasonal climbing camps, and events, while ensuring a safe and engaging environment for children aged 4-16. The coordinator will recruit and train instructors, communicate with parents, and implement a structured yet flexible curriculum to maximize student engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and train new youth instructors as needed.
  • Serve as the point person for performance improvement conversations with staff.
  • Collaborate with the Initiatives Manager and/or Support Team Manager on marketing and outreach efforts.
  • Act as the first line of contact for youth instructors regarding operational issues.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with youth program staff.
  • Independently run 1 to 1.5 hour classes with 4-6 students.
  • Implement a structured curriculum while being creative and flexible to maintain engagement.
  • Communicate with parents regarding their child's progress.
  • Provide ongoing instructor training and support through check-ins and shadowing classes.
  • Track student progress to inform advancement.
  • Create staff schedules and coordinate with the support team to fill classes.
  • Plan parent communication in coordination with the support team.
  • Assist in creating youth program policies alongside the Youth Program Manager and local Gym Leadership team.
  • Assist with class coverage when necessary.
  • Meet weekly with the Gym Leadership team/Youth Program Manager.

Requirements

  • Availability during the 4pm-8pm time-slot on weekdays and 10am-1pm on weekends.
  • Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter Break availability for camp support.
  • 1 year or more of experience working with children, preferably in sports.
  • Previous experience teaching rock climbing to children is strongly preferred.
  • 1 year or more of personal climbing experience is preferred but not required.
  • High level of energy to match the energy of kids.
  • Safety focused and vigilant.
  • Good communication skills with both children and adults.
  • Dependable and timely.
  • Upstanding reputation in the climbing community.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in sports coaching or teaching.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to individual student needs.
