About the position

The Youth Residential Support Specialist I at SEARHC is responsible for providing behavioral health interventions and skill development to youth and families using the Teaching Family Model. This role involves maintaining program structure, ensuring client safety, and collaborating with community entities to support the therapeutic goals of clients. The position requires flexibility in working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet the needs of the program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide behavioral health interventions and teach skill development including effective communication, positive social interaction, problem solving, decision making, and anger management.
  • Maintain consistent program and activity structure and provide therapeutic limits.
  • Demonstrate effective problem-solving skills and good active listening.
  • Use approved strategies to prevent aggressive behavior and deescalate volatile situations.
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of co-occurring disorders and the interrelationship of substance abuse and mental health.
  • Utilize teaching techniques and interventions according to the Teaching Family Model and engage clients within the treatment process.
  • Understand, utilize, teach and implement motivational systems.
  • Plan, supervise and document daily activities that meet therapeutic goals.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and interventions to ensure client safety and inform supervisor of any crisis or unsafe situation.
  • Document daily progress notes in a timely manner, meeting agency standards and state and federal regulations.
  • Engage in moderate physical recreational activities that support recovery.
  • Establish and engage in professional collaboration within SEARHC and relevant community entities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet program, clinic, departmental and organizational goals.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Qualified Addiction Professional (QAP) certification or ability to obtain within 3 years of hire.
  • Must achieve the Teaching Family Certification within 1 year of hire (RSS working solely overnight shifts are exempt from this requirement).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current and valid state of Alaska Driver's License.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Preferred - 1 year of experience working with emotionally and/or behaviorally disturbed youth.
