About the position

The Youth Substance Wellness Specialist is responsible for providing compassionate counseling, prevention education, and assessment services for children and adolescents at risk of substance use or in need of support. This role combines direct intervention with educational initiatives to foster awareness and resilience among young individuals and their families. The Specialist will work collaboratively with school personnel, families, and community resources to provide a comprehensive approach to substance wellness and prevention.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling to children and adolescents experiencing substance-related challenges, using evidence-based therapeutic techniques tailored to young clients.
  • Design and deliver engaging prevention workshops, activities, and presentations that educate youth on the risks associated with substance use and promote healthy coping mechanisms.
  • Conduct initial and ongoing assessments of clients' substance-related behaviors and overall well-being, incorporating family history, social influences, and personal health.
  • Work with school counselors, teachers, social workers, and family members to develop personalized support and intervention plans that promote sustainable wellness.
  • Identify and refer clients to additional resources, such as specialized mental health services, community programs, and educational tools, when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including progress notes, assessment results, and intervention plans in accordance with ethical and organizational standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Professional experience in youth counseling, substance abuse treatment, or prevention programming.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent development, substance use risk factors, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Excellent communication and rapport-building skills with youth and families.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and collaborate with educational institutions and community agencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification or licensure in substance abuse counseling (preferred but not required).
  • Skilled in motivational interviewing, behavioral counseling, or other relevant therapeutic techniques.
  • Capacity for creating interactive, age-appropriate prevention content.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills for documentation and case management.
