About the position

The Zamboni Driver at American Airlines Center is responsible for operating the Zamboni to resurface and maintain the ice in compliance with NHL standards. This role involves diagnosing and troubleshooting issues with the Zamboni and the ice surface, ensuring optimal conditions for all ice events.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the Zamboni Ice Resurfacer safely and efficiently to ensure the best possible ice surface for NHL and other ice events.
  • Prepare all hockey and associated equipment for use during ice events.
  • Set up and remove all hockey and associated equipment for use during ice events.
  • Assist Zamboni drivers in ice maintenance as assigned.
  • Clean, inspect, and repair dasher boards, related equipment, and ice maintenance equipment.
  • Operate ice maintenance equipment as directed (e.g., Edger, ice chippers, shovel).
  • Keep the Zamboni room and tunnel clean and ensure tools are put in their proper place.
  • Ensure all glass is clean and free of damage requiring replacement.
  • Ensure all necessary equipment is out and in proper location prior to the start of the game.
  • Assist in taking down NHL safety netting after games as needed.
  • Monitor the ice surface for any foreign items and remove them as instructed by the supervisor or NHL official.
  • Inspect the ice surface for areas needing attention by skating during intermission while the ice is being resurfaced.
  • Assist in the installation of the ice sheet.
  • Assist in the installation and removal of in-ice logos.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in the ice making and maintenance profession.
  • 3 or more years of experience driving an ice-resurfacing machine, preferably a Zamboni.
  • Ability to interpret and adjust resurfacing equipment accordingly.
  • Complete understanding of water and ice dynamics and temperature profiles of a professional skating surface.
  • Ability to observe and correct unsafe conditions in the use and operation of all ice resurfacing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of all mechanical functions of resurfacing and associated ice resurfacing equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and diagnose ice resurfacing conditions and/or problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to take complex and accurate ice measurements and document properly.
  • Customer-service oriented with a fan-friendly attitude and a professional appearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • NHL or U.S. Ice Rink Association certification program preferred.
