About the position

The Zoning Administrator for Community Development is responsible for directing and administering the operations of the Office of Planning, Zoning, and Sustainability (OPZ+S) in Clayton County. This role involves overseeing land use planning, zoning, and sustainable activities, ensuring compliance with zoning codes, and providing technical assistance to county officials. The position aims to ensure orderly development within the county, enhance economic opportunities for residents, and improve the overall image of the county. The Zoning Administrator will lead a team, manage departmental operations, and coordinate with various stakeholders to implement community development policies effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff, addressing employee concerns and conducting performance appraisals.
  • Coordinate daily work activities, prioritize tasks, and monitor the status of work in progress.
  • Consult with the Chief Operating Officer and other officials to ensure compliance with county policies.
  • Interpret and ensure adherence to applicable codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Establish long-term goals and objectives for the department.
  • Formulate and administer departmental rules, policies, and budget.
  • Oversee consultant contracts and coordinate with departments for software implementation.
  • Attend meetings and engage with citizens, developers, and community members.
  • Manage departmental documentation and inventory of vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in City, County or Regional Planning, Land-Use or Urban/Regional Planning, or a closely related field with six years of experience; or a Bachelor's degree with eight years of experience in a related field.
  • Minimum of three years supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of community planning best practices, Smart Growth Principles, and urban planning processes.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and basic computer software.

Nice-to-haves

  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification preferred.
  • Experience with budgeting practices and code enforcement procedures.
