The NC Zoo is looking for two enthusiastic team members to join the Chimpanzee, Lion, and Lemur Zookeeper team. This role involves daily assessment and care of animal habitats, focusing on health, behavior, and welfare of the animals, while also engaging with zoo guests and participating in various zoo programs.

  • Systematic observation of animal health and behavior.
  • Participation in a behavior-focused program utilizing trust-based relationships, animal choice and control, and positive reinforcement operant conditioning.
  • Interaction with zoo guests in formal and informal settings.
  • Development and implementation of a holistic behavioral management program.
  • Heavy lifting of hay, grain, manure, substrates, etc.
  • Record keeping for computer databases.
  • Actively participating in team problem solving and decision-making processes.
  • Participation in NC Zoo programs, including behavioral management, enrichment, and Environmental Management System (EMS) programs.
  • May be assigned to work with other animal species in other work units as needed.
  • Demonstrated hands-on animal care experience with primates and/or large felids at an AZA accredited zoo, sanctuary setting or related facility.
  • Experience with positive reinforcement based operant conditioning.
  • Knowledge of environmental enrichment and observing animal behavior.
  • Demonstrated experience of animal husbandry and knowledge of biology, including anatomy, physiology, ecology, and behavior.
  • Experience with record-keeping and using MS Office Suite programs.
  • Proven communication skills including visitor interactions, public speaking, and team interactions.
  • Salary range: $31,688 - $43,800
