Prerequisites
A minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting or tax preparation, which includes at least 2,000 hours of work in the past 4 years.
A passing score on the Comprehensive Examination for Accreditation in Accountancy which covers financial accounting, reporting, statement preparation, taxation, business consulting services, business law, and ethics.
An associate or bachelor's degree in accounting—or an equivalent course of study as defined by ACAT—from an accredited college, university, or professional school, or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.
Agreement to adhere to the ACAT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
Completion of the ACAT continuing education requirements to maintain the certification, which includes 120 hours of continuing professional education every 3 years, with a minimum of 16 hours per year.
For those without an associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, successful completion of the ACAT's Accredited Business Accountant/Advisor education program may be required.
