Prerequisites
Minimum of two years of on-the-job training or one year of on-the-job training and a two-year degree in automotive repair to be eligible for most ASE certifications.
Pass a series of ASE exams to earn Master Technician status, which typically includes tests on engine repair, automatic transmissions, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance.
For each specialty area, you must pass the corresponding ASE test and have hands-on work experience in that area.
Recertification is required every five years to maintain the Master Technician status, which involves passing updated tests to ensure technicians keep up with the ever-changing automotive technology.
Provide proof of work experience through employer certification or other documentation as required by ASE.
