Prerequisites
Completion of a medical assistant program accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP, or a post-secondary medical assisting program approved by the U.S. Department of Education, with at least 720 hours of instruction including a clinical externship.
Work experience as a medical assistant for a minimum of 5 years, with no more than 2 years of which may be as an instructor in a post-secondary medical assistant program.
Passing a generalist medical assistant certification examination through another recognized certifying body, along with 3 out of the last 5 years of work experience as a medical assistant instructor in a post-secondary medical assistant program.
Current status as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the AAMA, or as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the NCCT, or as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the NHA, or as a National Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) through the NAHP.
For recent graduates, application for the RMA exam must be within four years of graduation from the program.
