Prerequisites
High school diploma or equivalent; candidates without a high school diploma can enroll if they are currently enrolled in a high school's career and technical education program in early childhood education.
Completion of 120 hours of formal early childhood education training, covering the growth and development of children from birth to age 5, with no fewer than 10 training hours in each of the eight CDA subject areas.
A minimum of 480 hours of professional work experience in a center-based, home visitor, or family child care setting, working with children of the age group the candidate wishes to be certified in (infant/toddler, preschool, or family child care).
Preparation of a professional portfolio that includes reflective statements of competence, a resource collection, and family questionnaires.
Successful completion of the CDA Exam, which assesses understanding of fundamental early childhood education competencies.
Observation by a CDA Professional Development Specialist in the candidate's work setting to evaluate and demonstrate their ability to work with children in the chosen age group.
