About the position
We are seeking a VP-level finance leader to join our team at Semafor. As the VP, Finance and Operations, you will be responsible for designing and managing our global finance operations. This role requires an international outlook, global experience, and a passion for innovation and automation in financial operations. You will have the opportunity to upgrade and implement financial policies and procedures, execute the budget process, and provide analytical support to our management team. Additionally, you will oversee the work of our outsourced finance and internal business operations teams. Join us and help build a global news platform that prioritizes transparency and trust.
Responsibilities
- Oversee, direct, and organize the work of Semafor's outsourced finance and internal business operations teams
- Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement
- Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures
- Plan, coordinate, and execute the budget process
- Provide analytical support to Semafor's internal management team
- Improve administrative and operational accounting services such as treasury management, spend management/payment processing, payroll, accounts payable, and purchasing
- Take over the existing finance operations for a 25 person company and scale it to more than 60 team members
- Manage outsourced finance and IT teams
- Work with key operations resources embedded in Revenue, Editorial, and Events teams
Requirements
- Business or Accounting degree mandatory, MBA preferred
- CPA preferred
- Minimum 10 years experience in a management role with external audit and in-house financial management experience
- Proven track record of facilitating organizational change and development in a high-growth organization
- Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution
- Strong mentoring and coaching experience
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
- Superior management skills, ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
- Self-reliant, results-oriented, and proactive
- Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
- Ability to operate as both a tactical and strategic thinker
- International background or global outlook, demonstrated commitment to diversity
- Understanding of the news publishing space and passion for supporting journalism
- Experience working in creative, innovative, and distributed international environments.
